"Posters are a powerful form of social commentary as an artist or designer’s way of contributing to societal issues. A designer’s role is no different than that of any good citizen; each individual has the opportunity to use their skills in terms of conveying a message or reacting to a situation. The role of the designer varies within the political climate that they operate, but a designer must work to penetrate immunity to social issues. Clearly, there is no lack of subject matter to address in regards to social issues. As Andrew Lewis said, “If we design, let’s design for change, going beyond just design but actually making a comment and using skills in terms to convey a message or react to a situation.” Posters are a clear medium of visual communication in society and as such, is one of the best examples of a pure synthesis of artistic skill and political comment.
(...)Whether to spark discussion on a social issue or advertise a band coming to town, posters play a role in society and will continue to do so. Humans have an innate desire to share and a poster is a timeless way of communicating a message. The Internet has not been a hindrance to the poster, but has offered an even larger distribution outlet. As Majid Abassi stated, “Posters are not just vertical and horizontal sheets of paper to be hung on walls; they are wise reflections of human life at any given period.” [excerpts from Gallery Guide]
